Humboldt County, located in Northern California, has been grappling with the issue of substance abuse for years. The county’s unique geographic location and demographics have contributed to the high rates of substance abuse. According to a survey conducted by the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services, illegal opioids, methamphetamine, and alcohol were considered the biggest issues when asked the same question about adults [1]. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) mission is to advance science on the causes and consequences of drug use and addiction, and to apply that knowledge to improve individual and public health [2]. The same survey participants ranked many substances as a “big issue” for both adults and youth in the community [1]. Several factors contribute to the high rates of substance abuse in Humboldt County. These include poverty, systemic racism, and untreated mental health issues in family systems, which lead to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) [1]. The survey participants expressed belief in a relationship between the availability of alcohol and other drugs and the presence of trauma in young people’s lives [1]. These factors highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to tackling substance abuse in the county.

Efforts to address substance abuse in Humboldt County include Substance Use Prevention programs that work towards raising awareness about the impacts of alcohol and other drug abuse in the community, creating a healthy environment for young people, and advocating for policies that reduce access to these substances [3]. The county also has a 24-hour Substance Use Disorder Access Line and programs for recovery [4]. Additionally, the county’s law enforcement agencies have been successful in conducting seizures of monetary and property assets and illegal drugs, severely reducing drug sales and distribution within the county [5]. These efforts need to be sustained and expanded to effectively address the substance abuse problem in Humboldt County.
